Messages from the monster house build business sense

Minden, Nebraska –Failed house flipper Monica Boyken will discuss how an unsuccessful business venture proves the value of working a business plan at the August PK Inventors and Entrepreneurs (I & E) Club meeting. Boyken’s perspective on wise use of a business plan launches a three-part series titled Taking Care of Business. The August 16 session will be held at the Minden Opera House, 322 East 5th in Minden.

“I look back on that project and cannot believe the mistakes I made,” states Boyken, who currently serves as Executive Director of the Phelps County Development Corporation. “It’s really almost comical. I wrote a business plan, but I missed some key elements of the process. Time and experience have helped me see that what I once considered to be a failure on my part is truly a composting process. My trash became the treasure that allows me to help others grow successful businesses.”

The PK I & E Club offers monthly meetings to provide education, information, expert speakers, and opportunities for members to network with peers and resource providers.

Each meeting starts with a speaker followed by an organized networking session. The networking component of the PK Partnership's monthly I & E meetings provides a platform for entrepreneurs to request assistance from other business owners or resource providers. Participants are also able to offer suggestions from their own experiences to help other attendees.

“The networking available at I & E Club provides great stimulation for me and my business,” states Joe Roberts of Roberts Seed in Axtell. “I get to hear what did and didn’t work for another business. The guest speakers have helped me hone and sharpen my business skills. There is also the opportunity to visit with potential investors.”

PK I&E Club meetings are free to the public. For more information contact Minden Economic Development, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. New Marketing Strategies for Small Business Help Make 2010 the Best Year Yet

The PK Partnership announces an Innovator & Entrepreneur (I&E)club meeting set for 6 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Minden Fire Hall, located at 325 N Colorado St., Minden, NE.

In response to numerous requests for assistance with marketing strategies, this meeting will feature guest speaker Tricia Danburg, with SCORR Marketing Company in Kearney, outlining successful marketing techniques her company employs with its clients. "We specialize in developing next-phase growth strategies and a disciplined approach to marketing plans that insure solid, incremental growth, year after year, creating tangible results," Danburg said.

Sharing the seven-step process with which SCORR's clients have realized positive results, Danburg will help meeting participants develop their own individual marketing plan including: research, strategic planning, brand management, communications plan, campaign development, message distribution, and performance evaluation.

Teaming up with several area business resources, PK Partnership's I & E monthly meetings provide education and information, expert speakers, and opportunities for members to network with peers and resource providers.

"We believe there are talented individuals in South Central Nebraska, and this networking system will jump-start new businesses and inspire and reinvigorate existing businesses," said Lisa Karnatz, of Kearney County Economic Development Agency, and PK Club Chairperson. "For a business owner, the beginning of a new year is a great time to regroup, evaluate and focus on improving their business. The formal portion of each meeting starts with an educational component followed by an organized networking session," Karnatz added.

The networking component provides a platform for entrepreneurs and service providers to offer advice or request assistance from the group.

"This is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to build community with people in similar circumstances," said I&E Club member Sara Stevens-Stehl. "As a solo practitioner, I love the chance to bounce my ideas off of other business people. The meetings offer a great educational opportunity, and by working together we can each strengthen our own businesses and our area's economy."

PK I&E Club meetings are free to the public with snacks provided by rotating sponsors. EDGE CLASS INSPIRES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE, PLANNING

Holdrege - Getting an education for about $9 an hour is a good deal. Entrepreneurs can take the PK EDGE class for that price and end up with a complete and thorough business plan and a better sense of how to do business. A very good deal.

The next PK Enhancing, Developing, and Growing Entrepreneurs (EDGE) class will start August 25th. The curriculum is built around writing a business plan for a start up or for an existing business but the class environment is far from being as dull as that may sound. Each class includes structured learning with an expert in business development, dynamic live speakers from the local business community, and group work time.

Participants are able to share information about their businesses and to network, but confidentiality is kept outside the class. They also form personal and business bonds that reap benefits long after the class is over. The process of writing the business plan helps the entrepreneurs improve business practices and sets them on a path toward profitability.

The twelve sessions are scheduled to start on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 6:00 pm to 9:30pm CST in Minden, and will be completed in early December. Lois Thom of Minden, MBA, business consultant and partner in her family's farm operation, is the class instructor.

Early registration fee is $375.00 until August 7th ($425 after). The fee includes tuition, textbook, and workbook. Business partners attend free and the class is limited to fifteen businesses.

Register by going online to the EDGE page at www.PKPartnership.org or contact Jean Issler at 308-995-2347 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

PK EDGE is sponsored by the PK Partnership of Phelps and Kearney Counties, a public-private consortium of area professionals with a deep interest in helping businesses succeed in South Central Nebraska. Individual businesses donate funds to PK to keep the EDGE tuition cost affordable for small businesses.

PK I & E Club (Innovators and Entrepreneurs) has canceled its meeting planned for July 20th in Minden. Instead, a meeting will be held on that date to form an advisory council for the group. The advisory council meeting will be held at the Minden Fire Hall, 246 N. Colorado Ave. on July 20th at 7:00pm. Any I & E member interested in serving on the council is welcome to attend the July 20th meeting.

"The change in meetings was brought about by busy summer schedules and the need for I & E to become more 'user-owned,'" according to committee co-chair Lisa Karnatz of Kearney County Economic Development Agency. "I & E started off strong showing that the education and networking for entrepreneurs is a needed thing. Now it's time for the entrepreneurs to take over what PK Partnership started."

Karnatz stated that PK Partnership will continue to be a guiding entity for I & E, but responsibility for choosing meeting topics and for when and how meetings are held will be turned over to the council.

I & E members and prospective members are urged to check the PK Partnership website at www.pkpartnership.org for updates regarding upcoming meetings and activities.

For the past 14 years, the NebraskaEDGE (Enhancing, Developing, and Growing Entrepreneurs) has been offering entrepreneurial classes in communities across the state of Nebraska creating stronger, more viable businesses. Wanting to offer the EDGE class locally, area leaders from Phelps and Kearney County partnered together in 2006 to form PK PARTNERSHIP and have now offered the NebraskaEDGE class to local businesses as PK EDGE. In 2007, the first year PK Edge was offered, 14 area businesses seeking assistance with their business and planning ideas participated in class.

Upon seeing that quality, high value small business programs and training were desired in Phelps and Kearney County, PK PARTNERSHIP began to offer business transition workshops, youth entrepreneurial training and classes designed to help potential entrepreneurs decide upon which business they should start. The PK PARTNERSHIP’s resources are obtained from Phelps and Kearney County businesses and organizations. The PK PARTNERSHIP is financially supported by Phelps and Kearney County businesses. Current sponsors of the PK PARTNERSHIP include, Holdrege Chamber of Commerce, Tier One Bank of Holdrege, First Bank and Trust of Minden, Minden Exchange Bank, Bank of Bertrand, First National Bank of Holdrege, Phelps County Development Corporation, Kearney County Economic Development Agency, Furnas-Harlan Partnership, Allmand Bros., Firstier Bank of Holdrege, Central Community College, Nebraska Workforce Development-Department of Labor, Principal Financial, Rural Enterprise Assistance Program (REAP), South Central Economic Development District, and South Central Resource, Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council.

I & E MEETING, FEB 16, 2009 IN HOLDREGE

GrowNebraska and entrepreneurial practices were the educational focus of the PK I & E Club held Monday in Holdrege. Some thirty entrepreneurs attended from the Phelps and Kearney County area while others travelled from as far away as Cozad and Pleasanton.

Janell Anderson Ehrke, director of GrowNebraska spoke about what makes entrepreneurs successful. GrowNebraska helps its members, Nebraska entrepreneurs, with marketing their products across a broad spectrum. Anderson Ehrke also spoke on the Elements of Achievement; Drive, Desire, Goal and Dream.

Holen One Farms owners, Renee and Mike Holen of Bertrand, shared their company’s story which began when the empty-nesters retired from farming. Through serendipity they came into possession of a secret marinade recipe they tasted in a California restaurant. The marinade became the foundation of their line of marinades, rubs and sauces. Their products have recently appeared on the shelves of most Hy-Vee stores in Nebraska.

The Holens' also operate a concession stand which features steak on a stick that is a staple at several area events. Recent restructuring has allowed the Holens to expand the concession business into catering. Holen said that getting expert help is essential in learning how to operate a business. "You can't make it on your own--tap into somebody else's knowledge…network for help." was Holen’s suggestion.

Anderson Ehrke concluded by giving tips about Internet marketing, saying that a web site can be used to market products effectively. Once a site is up, there are numerous ways to get reports on its effectiveness. She said using podcasts on YouTube and messages on Facebook are some of the latest online marketing tools.

The I & E Club is a group where innovators, investors, inventors and entrepreneurs meet to network with members, make connections with people who can help them, and learn about important topics. The meeting includes social time, an educational component and networking time. The next meeting is scheduled for March 16 at the Fire Hall in Minden. I & E is sponsored by PK Partnership of Phelps and Kearney Counties, South Central Economic Development District (SCEDD), and the Rural Enterprise Assistance Project (REAP).
